The gut microbiota and host health
Web13 Jun 2024 · Our gut harbors trillions of microbes representing all kingdoms of life that are essential for host development and physiology. This “gut microbiota” constitutes a complex community that interacts with each other and with the host to modulate biological processes essential for health. Web1 Mar 2013 · The gut microbiota is regarded as a “superorganism” encoding genes involved in breaking down dietary fibers, amino acids, drugs, and producing methane and/or vitamins ( Arumugam et al., 2011, Pennisi, 2010, Strozzi and Mogna, 2008 ). The gut microbiome is estimated to contain 150-fold more genes than the human genome.
